The week of October 21 - 25, 2024 is School Bus Safety Week and October 23, 2023 marks a very important day! A
day that we would like to stop for a moment and truly appreciate the outstanding efforts of our dedicated school
bus drivers.
Many students’ school day starts and ends with a ride on a school bus. It goes without saying that our
professional school bus drivers are an extraordinary and talented group of individuals who accept a tremendous
responsibility to ensure that kids remain safe and out of harm’s way each day. If you are a motorist, you
can share some of that responsibility.
RED LIGHTS FLASHING – NO PASSING! We need the support of all motorists while buses perform their daily
routes. Flashing overhead "Amber" lights mean that the bus is slowing down and is about to stop to pickup or
drop off students. When you see a school bus with its overhead "Amber" lights flashing:
- Slow down
- Be prepared to stop
- Watch out for children
The law requires motorists to stop in both directions for a school bus with the red lights flashing.
Please take a moment to thank your driver for the awesome and important work they do! A small gesture of kindness
can go a long way.
On School Bus Driver Appreciation Day – and indeed every day – the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board would
like to encourage parents, students, teachers, school administrators and community members to recognize our more
than 400 school bus drivers that transport kids across the Hamilton region. Please show them your gratitude for their
service, support and dedication, especially during these times of continued school bus driver shortage.
